Tattoos were once largely seen as a symbol of rebellion. Over the years, they have crept their way into mainstream American culture, slowly losing their stereotype over time. Nowadays, one in every five American adults has at least one tattoo, and they are becoming more common every day. However, despite the nearly universal acceptance of tattoos, employers still see them as a means to discriminate against potential hire candidates. Particularly careers in the field of customer service, sales, and healthcare still hold a pretty strong stigma against tattoos and a surprisingly large percentage still see them as a means to deny employment. While some companies narrow down their decision making to ‘where the tattoo is located’ or ‘what the design of the tattoo is,’ other companies have a zero-tolerance policy for any visible tattoos.
